Please take a look around. Have you noticed that there are many people with physical disabilities in your living environment? Now empathize and look again at the environment in which you live, through their eyes, whether that environment is suitable for them. When you put yourself in their place, you will realize that your environment is not that suitable for you, at least life is a little more difficult than your real situation. So how aware were you of this situation before and did it seem normal to you before?
It is the basic right of all people with and without physical disabilities to benefit from public spaces, to live, to travel, to take a vacation, to work in a suitable job, and to be involved in life. However, due to the lack of suitable solutions inroads for transportation, accommodation, and public spaces, physically disabled people remain disadvantaged. For example, in many countries, it is hardly possible to enter many sidewalks and other public spaces with a wheelchair for physically impaired people. Although there have been recent developments in this regard, more efforts are needed to make public spaces, holiday venues, accommodation, and transportation facilities suitable for physically handicapped people.
It is not possible for us to fully understand people with a physical disability because it did not happen to us. But there is still something we can do. So what can we do about it as the whole of humanity? Although we can do a lot as individuals, we are actually much stronger when we act as a society. However, we must start small as individuals, by applying ourselves and advocating for the improvement of our environment. We must persuade other people and create movements that can affect the hearts of people. Not just on a local level but through the entire society, make accessibilities for disabled people a norm in our daily life, and eventually reach the level of government. That is when the real change will occur.
