Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Completed

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which we mentioned in our previous articles, have been completed. These games started with a one-year delay like the 2020 Olympic Games and took place from 24 August to 5 September 2021. Para-Badminton and Para-Taekwondo branches, which were opened for the first time, also took place in these games. Approximately 4,400 athletes competed in 22 branches in these completed games.

            At the completed 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, China took first place in the medal standings with 96 gold, 60 silver, 51 bronze medals. Great Britain came second in the medal standings with 41 gold, 38 silver, and 45 bronze medals, while the United States was third with 37 gold, 36 silver, and 31 bronze medals.

At the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, some countries received gold medals for the first time. Ethiopia is one of these countries. Ethiopian Tigist Gezahagn Mengistu, 21, won the women’s 1500 meters in her first big championship. Pakistani Haider Ali became the champion in men’s discus with a record throw of 55.26 meters. Ecuadorian sisters Poleth and Anais Mendez took gold and bronze, respectively, in the women’s shot put. Sri Lankan Dinesh Priyantha Herath Mudiyanselage broke the world record in the men’s javelin throwing 4 meters. These are some of them that can be listed. Some names won multiple medals in the games. Ukrainian Maksym Krypak became the athlete with the most medals in the Games. Maksym  Krypak showed an impressive performance and became the owner of 5 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal in the swimming category.

Young athletes at the games gave hope. 17-year-old American athlete Anastasia Pagonis beat the Dutch Liesette Bruinsma, two-time Paralympic champion and three-time world champion. 18-year-old Hungarian Peter Kiss became both Paralympic and world champion in the 200m ski.

All these developments are valuable in terms of showing that there are no obstacles in sports. We congratulate all the athletes who competed. For those who are wondering, let me tell you in advance. The next Paralympic Games will be held in Paris in 2024.
